He used insights gained from Buddhism and Yoga in order to help patients come to terms with the illness that afflicted them. Initially the Clinic was set up to work only with those patients whose condition was considered to be terminal. However, as the medical establishment became aware that some of their patients were actually curedto a certain degree, and others became increasingly competent at managing their illness better, his work was gradually accepted into the medical system. Kabat-Zinn has written a number of books on the subject, and has given many courses and workshops all over the world.
