The Soto Zen Centre Suiren-ji in the university town of Leiden is run by the monk Zeshin van der Plas. Zeshin has been a practising Zen Buddhist since 1981. He was taught initially by a number of European tutors, but since 1986 he has been a student of the Japanese zen abbot Tangen Harada Roshi. He lived at his monastery for three years, after which Roshi gave him the authorisation to become a Zen teacher himself.

Zeshin runs his Centre along unorthodox lines, and – if necessary -will turn his hand to even the most ordinary tasks. This is his way of helping people eradicate the schism in their own lives, between who they think they ought to be and who they really are – it is his way of enabling their ‘awakening’, in keeping with the zen tradition of participating in all aspects of daily life with compassion and mindfullness.
