Lucia Rijker is fourfold world champion kickboxing and twofold world champion boxing. Shooting for this film started well over three years ago, before she got offered a role in Clint Eastwood’s A Million Dollar Baby.

After the film received four Oscars, a Million Dollar Lady fight was set up with her old rival Christy Martin. Eleven days before this historic fight was to take place, Lucia tore her Achilles tendon.

During this turbulent period her mother fell seriously ill, so that she was forced to make some life choices. Should she, nearing forty, start a family of her own, pass on the knowledge gained by experience through teaching, or stake her all on one last and ultimate fight? In the meantime, Buddhism started to take up an increasingly key role in her life. She tried to see the many obstacles put in her way as lessons for life.

She returned to the native country of her father, Surinam, and for the first time learned to look back instead of always striving after a goal. The recognition she had been striving for all her life was put in a different perspective. Victory is not attained only in the ring.

Het is zeer inspirerend een Soka Gakkai International (SGI) boeddhiste zo mooi geportreteerd te zien. Ik wil de documentaire graag aan mijn buitenlandse vrienden laten zien. Op de premiere werd hij getoond met Engelse ondertiteling. Kunnen jullie deze versie toevoegen aan de website?
21-9-2007  Ton "geraakt" - Quote Wat een ongelooflijk boeiend mens. Verdriet, boosheid, zoeken en een redelijke innerlijke rust gevonden in een tegenstrijdige wereld. Zelf ben ik ook al jaren zoekende maar heb de rust nog niet gevonden. Dus ook een boeiende documentaire op een toevallig tijdstip waarop ik eigenlijk andere dingen te doen had. Maar wat is tijd?
