In Part 1 the myth about the Buddha’s life until his enlightenment is compared with recent archaeological discoveries. Recently, for example, the palace of the Buddha’s father was found. It corresponds to everything described about the place in the canonical texts, and on-site radiocarbon dating has also confirmed it’s age.
According to the myth, the young Gautama grew up in luxury inside the palace walls. At his birth, an astrologist predicted that he would become either a great worldly leader or a great spiritual leader. His father was afraid that the family dynasty would come to an end if his only son would choose the spiritual life. He therefore made sure Gautama would not be confronted with ordinary life.
The archeological discoveries indicate that though his father was king of the Sakya tribe and belonged to a warrior caste, there had been no excessive luxury to speak of. The king was more of a hard-working gentleman-farmer than someone with a large royal household.
The film reconstructs life as it was at the time on the basis of archaeological discoveries and the life of the present-day Sakyas, for whom time has stood still and for whom memories of the Buddha are still very much alive.

7-7-2004  Allard Jongebloed - - Quote In 2003 is door de BOS de documentaire "The life of the Buddha" in 2 delen uitgezonden. De documentaire is te koop op video bij de BOS, echter voor 30 euro. Dat is mij iets te veel. Is er iemand die dit op video of nog mooier op dvd heeft opgenomen? Alvast bedankt voor uw reactie.
