He realized at a young age that life was quite complex . As a nine-year-old he witnessed that his hometown Rotterdam was bombed by Germany, and ever since he has been intrigued by questioning the meaning of life.
His inner search has brought him to places all over the world, including a long term stay at a zen monastery in Kyoto. He has written about his experiences in Japan in the Zen trilogy, The Empty Mirror, Glimpses of Nothingness and After Zen.

This program presents a portrait of the artist and author. Janwillem and his Colombian wife Juanita live in Maine, on America's east coast, with their dog Tilly. We see him among his statues and collages in a sequence of serious jokes, unlikely anecdotes and curious rituals. His deeply rooted ambiguity towards humanity apparently doesn't keep him from enjoying life, here and now.
