Surrounded by bustling restaurants, coffee shops and red light windows, two young Chinese nuns quietly go about their daily routines inside the He Hua (Lotus) Temple standing at Amsterdam’s (in)famous Zeedijk street. A giant temple run by two small nuns, Venerable Man Jung and Venerable Chueh Hai, is changing the dynamics of life on the Zeedijk. A bridge, an oasis, a source of light—these are metaphors the nuns use in describing their temple.

Trained in the Fo Guang Buddhist order in Taiwan, which advocates socially-engaged Buddhism, the two nuns offer a range of service to both the Chinese and the Dutch: meditation and study programs, family visits, funeral services, and dance lessons. Socially engaged or alone, the nuns seize every moment to cultivate a power to transform the inner and outer world. They practice both the Pure Land and Ch'an tradition of meditation. Their goal is to reach the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha and then to come back and serve sentient beings in this world.

The two nuns join hands with the Buddhist Union of the Netherlands to create for the first time a pan-Buddhist celebration of the Buddha’s birthday. The collective effort of Chinese and Dutch, Buddhists and non-Buddhists, resulted in a large festival in Amsterdam in May 2005. The small world of the Zeedijk and the Nieuwmarkt is transformed into a land of harmony and joy. A Chinese Buddhist ideal is manifested.

27-1-2006  Willem van der Veen - - Quote Hallo, Ik heb via internet de uitzending gezien van "Zuiver Land Amsterdam" van 23 oktober 2005. Zo rond de 15/16e minuut wordt er muziek gedraaid van een chinese zangeres of koor. Weten jullie misschien hoe zij heet en hoe het lied heet, want ik vond het echt prachtig! 1-2-2006  BOS - - Quote Geachte heer Van der Veen, De muziek in Zuiver land, Amsterdam bestaat uit het reciteren van de Hart Soetra, afkomstig van een Chinese CD en gecomponeerd door een muzikant uit Singapore. 20-12-2006  Bert - - Quote Ik was wel erg algemeen in mijn vorige bericht van een paar dagen geleden. Ik heb de uitzending nog eens bekeken en na 15:30" hoor ik een koor zingen en na 27:30" heb ik muziek in de vorm van een soort gebed gehoord (dat wordt ook ondertiteld). Hier gaat het mij eigenlijk om.
