For three years climate journalist Bernice Notenboom reported from the hotspots of climate change: The North Pole region and the South Pole. She went on expeditions through Siberia, Greenland and to the North Pole. She was the first Dutch woman to reach the South Pole, on skis. In 2009 she focuses on a different important area of climatological change: The Himalayas. The glaciers of this mountain range, which is home to the sources of nearly all of the big rivers in East Asia, are melting rapidly. Over 1.5 billion people depend on Himalayan melting water. The film gives an up-to-date view on a rapidly changing area: The authoritative research institute IPCC claims there will be no more snow or ice there in 40 year’s time.
While climbing the Mount Everest Bernice saw the mountain lakes that are in danger of flooding because of the melting water: A phenomenon that has already wiped away several villages. She visited the local population, some monastic communities and a visit to the lama of the Khumbu valley, who blesses climbers before they go up Everest.
Himalaya Alert is dedicated to Sherpa Lhakpa Nuru who died in an avalanche during this expedition in the Khumbu ice valley. His body was found five months later. Bernice Notenboom and guide Walter Laserer barely survived this avalanche.
