Joseph Goldstein and Carol Wilson are pioneers of Buddhist practice in the United States. Together, they lead Vipassana retreats all over the world. Goldstein is an author, a meditation teacher, and founder of the Insight Meditation Society in the US. In 30 years’ time, the IMS has grown into one of the biggest centres in the world for the study and practice of Vipassana meditation. Carol Wilson has been teaching at the IMS since 1986. Both Goldstein and Wilson tackle our egocentric ‘what about me?´ attitude.
Showing great respect for the tradition they come from, they focus on what is working for the West. Wilson is not in favour of the term 'new’ or western’ Buddhism. She stresses that the teachings of the Buddha, such as the importance of compassion, have a direct appeal to westerners, and that they have been adapted only slightly in method and presentation. Since we are so self-absorbed, in our daily lives, how can we ever take care of others? In Sakyong Mipham’s videoclip ‘What about me’ he comes to the conclusion: If you want to be happy, direct you focus to ‘What about you’.
